Russia dominated the opening day of the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) World Cup in Moscow after winning 10 gold medals.

The host country claimed 10 of the 13 golds on offer at the Luzhniki Sports Complex.

Among the winners was reigning world champion Vera Lotkova, who was the victor in the women's 52 kilogram contest.

She beat Daniela Mihaela Chiss of Romania in the final.

Samara Abdumalik Kyzy of Kyrgyzstan and Gulnoza Ziyaeva of Uzbekistan completed the podium. 

Uzbekistan's Davlatjon Khamroev was one of the only non-Russian victors. 

The men's 62kg world champion defeated Russia's Artem Gorkovetc in the 68kg weight division to clinch gold.

Kyrgyzstan's Farkhad Abzhaliev was the bronze medallist alongside Tigran Sharov of Russia. 

Competition also took place in the combat divisions, with Alexander Salikov of Russia triumphing in the men's 62kg. 

He overcame Sayak Barakanov of Kyrgyzstan to win.

Fedor Durymanov of Russia and Uladzislau Mikheichyk of Belarus took third place. 

A memorial to the founders of sambo - Vasily Oshchepkov, Anatoly Kharlampiev and Viktor Spiridonov was unveiled in the Russian capital before competition began.

The World Cup, which is being contested by athletes from 15 countries, is scheduled to conclude tomorrow.
