Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee (RNOSC) President Valens Munyabagisha urged the Government to prioritise sports the country has excelled at.

In 2010, the Rwanda Government decided to prioritise football, basketball, athletics, cycling and Paralympic sports.

Munyabagisha claimed this decision was made based on the popularity of the sports rather than the chances of the country earning medals at an international competition, as reported by The New Times

The RNOSC President also suggested the Rwandan Government develop a new sports model to detect young and talented athletes.

"We need to hire an expert to analyse our sports’ potential and design a sports model that we can use to give orientation to our sports policies," Munyabagisha said.

Munyabagisha used the example of the lack of youth national teams in Rwandan football to illustrate his point.

"It is like seeing a primary school student skipping secondary school and going straight to university," he said.

"It shouldn’t go this way.

"If you can’t expect a medal in basketball, in football at the Olympic Games, and our players are winning medals in cycling, in athletics and beach volleyball, then the Government should be building a sports model around medal-winning disciplines."

Rwanda is set to make its 10th appearance at the Olympic Games at Tokyo 2020 next year.

The country is yet to earn an Olympic medal.

Jean de Dieu Nkundabera claimed a Paralympic gold medal in the T46 800 metres at Athens 2004.
