The second women's giant slalom contest at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Ski World Cup event in Courchevel was postponed until tomorrow after heavy snowfall.

Courchevel in France successfully held a giant slalom race yesterday, although conditions were made difficult by the heavy snow.

Italy's Marta Bassino had been the victor, followed by Sara Hector of Sweden and Petra Vlhová of the Czech Republic.

The second race will now take place tomorrow after the weather caused inconsistency of the snow surface.

FIS women's Alpine race director Peter Gerdol explained why the race had been delayed.

"We got a lot of snow during the whole race, during the whole day," Gerdol said.

"There was clearly a lot, but at the end of the race we had a lot of snow everywhere, so it was necessary to push this out and to try to prepare it for today.

"The forecast was not that promising but still we tried to remove everything.

"Unfortunately during the night, temperatures were not particularly low, it was still snowing a little bit, and we did not have a clear sky.

"That is the main reason why the course is not hard enough, and this is a very dangerous situation in the end for a race."

Two women's races in Swiss resort St Moritz were cancelled last weekend because of inclement weather.
