British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) has announced that 19 universities will deliver BUCS Active 4 projects from January.

The scheme aims to encourage physical activity to improve mental health, with tackling female inactivity another goal.

Encouraging those from lower socio-economic backgrounds to become more physically active has also been stated as an aim.

All 19 universities came through an application process, including the University of Chester which will run a project for the first time.

It will be the fourth cycle of BUCS Active which is backed by Sport England and will be delivered on a new digital technology platform, powered by Playwaze.

"A big thank you must go to Sport England for continuing to support BUCS Active," said BUCS director of delivery Jenny Morris.

"Their support has enabled us to reimagine how we can support universities to continue to provide tangible physical activity and sport opportunities, despite the challenges of the current climate.

"A special thanks to each of the universities that have expressed an interest in engaging in this innovative project.

"We look forward to making a positive impact within the sector over the next nine months and sharing our findings with the wider membership along the way."

Ali Burkett, the University of Chester's BUCS development officer, added: "We are thrilled to have been successful in the BUCS Active 4 expression of interest.

"These platforms will allow us to engage with our student community in a far more meaningful and dynamic way.

"We are very excited about launching our activity finder and challenges in the New Year."

Other universities to be successful include the prestigious University of Cambridge.

Universities in Birmingham, Brighton, London, Guildford, Norwich, Leicester, Loughborough, Manchester, Middlesbrough, Southampton, Warwick and Wolverhampton were also accepted.
