Russia's Nadezhda Sergeeva won on her monobob debut ©IBSF

Russia's Nadezhda Sergeeva claimed victory in the opening event of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) Women's Monobob World Series in Winterberg.

Sergeeva was making her debut appearance in monobob competition, ahead of the discipline being added to the programme for the 2022 Winter Olympics Games in Beijing. 

The 33-year-old, the reigning European champion in the two-woman event, posted the fastest two runs on the German track in a monobob the Russian Bobsleigh Federation had only taken delivery of two days before the competition. 

Sergeeva topped the standings after the first run of competition on 1min 00.21sec.

The Russian, who served an eight-month ban from the sport after testing positive for the prohibited substance trimetazidine during the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics, went faster in her second run.

She produced a time of 1:00.06.

Her overall time of 2:00.27 saw her top the standings ahead of Switzerland's Martina Fontanive.

Fontanive finished as the runner-up, ending 0.08 seconds down.

Austria's Katrin Beierl completed the podium places as she achieved a time of 2:00.80.

The monobob competition was held alongside the Europe Cup bobsleigh event at the German track.

Monobob is featuring on the second-tier Europe Cup and North American Cup circuits,as well as at IBSF World Cups for the first time this season.

There will be up to five races per Cup under the title IBSF Women's Monobob World Series.

Points scored will be included in a discipline ranking list, as well as a joint ranking list with two-woman bobsleigh.
