Azerbaijan lead the senior group competition at the halfway point following the five balls discipline at the Rhythmic Gymnastics European Championships in Kyiv.

Azerbaijan scored 34.600 points with a routine that demonstrated dramatic choreography to help them top the standings.

Israel sit in second on 34.100 points with Estonia in third place on 32.000 points.

Hosts Ukraine sit in fourth place on the same score with Estonia ahead in the standings on the tie break rules.

In fifth place are Turkey with 31.900 points and in sixth place are France on 29.250 points.

The senior group competition continues tomorrow at the Palace of Sports with competition taking place in the three hoops and two pairs of clubs discipline.

On the opening day of action qualifying also took place in the rope and ball categories within the junior section of the event.

The top three qualifiers in the rope discipline were Karina Sydorak of Ukraine in first place with 21.500, Dina Agisheva of Belarus in second place with 21.350 and Eva Brezalieva of Bulgaria in third place with 21.100.

Meanwhile in the ball discipline the top three qualifiers were Daria Atamanov of Israel in first place with 22.650, Polina Karika of Ukraine in second place with 22.650 and Melaniia Tur of Ukraine in third place with 22.450 points.

Atamanov leads Karika by virtue of a better execution score.

Junior qualifications continue tomorrow with the clubs and ribbon disciplines.

Day one concluded with the event's Opening Ceremony.

A host of countries have opted against participating in the Championships because of the coronavirus pandemic including Italy, Russia and Germany.

Despite the withdrawals 23 National Federations are participating while an estimated 115 gymnasts are scheduled to compete - 24 senior individuals, six senior groups and 57 junior gymnasts.

Due to COVID-19, the Olympic qualification process has moved to next year's event, meaning results in Kyiv will not count towards Tokyo 2020.
