Adams, who topped the women's 51 kilograms podium at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics, was one of 12 celebrities taking part in the show.

The BBC announced Adams has been forced to withdraw from the contest after professional dance partner Jones tested positive.

The BBC said Jones was asymptomatic and the pair are now self-isolating separately and following the latest government guidelines.

Protocols outlined ahead of the series meant the pairing were unable to continue in the 18th series of the popular show.

"I’m absolutely devastated my Strictly journey has come to an end so soon," Adams said.

"I had so much more to give and so many people to win this for.

"But I just want to say a huge thank you to Katya for being the best dance partner anyone could ask for.

"She pushed me way out of my comfort zone and it’s been an incredible experience.

"I’m gutted to be out of the competition but in these unprecedented times and as frustrating as it is, the COVID measures in place are to keep everyone safe, and I’m doing what I can to help.

"I’ll be spending the next 14 days isolating so I’d like to apologise in advance for the ridiculous amount of TikToks I’ll be posting, in my new found free time when I’m not gaming."

Adams and Jones made headlines in September when it was announced the duo would form the first same-sex couple on the show.

Adams retired from boxing last November following a long and successful career, citing concerns over her eyesight.

In 2001, she became the first female boxer to ever represent England and was English amateur champion for the first time in 2003.

She become European champion in 2011, before becoming the first female Olympic boxing champion at London 2012.

Adams earned Commonwealth Games gold in Glasgow two years later, before securing the European Games title in Baku in 2015.

She beat Sarah Ourahmoune of France in the Rio 2016 final, becoming the first British boxer to defend an Olympic title in 92 years.

Adams turned professional in 2017 and became the World Boxing Organization (WBO) world flyweight champion.

Adams was nominated for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award in 2012 and 2016, and made an OBE - Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire - in the 2016 New Year Honours list.

 The 38-year-old is one of several Olympians to have appeared on Strictly Come Dancing during the programme’s run.
