Organisers Peru ended day one at the top of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Online Youth World Cup medal table, having won five golds from the 12 on offer.

This event was formed in the absence of the in-person Youth World Weightlifting Championships, initially scheduled to be held from November 11 to 18 in Lima in Peru.

Now, it is taking place completely remotely through livestreams across the world.

The first competition of the day was the women's 40kg A - with three sets of medals in each category to be determined.

Turkey's Ezgi Kilic was the first big winner of the day having won both the snatch and the overall titles, as well as silver in the clean and jerk.

The only person to beat her on the day was Peru's Zayuri Sullca who ensured an early medal win for the virtual host nation in the clean and jerk ahead of Kilic and Thalia Castillo of Cuba.

Kilic had earlier thrashed the opposition in the snatch, finishing clear in front of Poland's Zofia Berlinska and Mexico's Darly Cantoon who completed the podium.

In the overall standings, Kilic won gold, Sullca won silver and Berlinska took bronze.

Following was the men's 49kg and by the end of this category, Peru were top of the medal table where they stayed for the rest of day one.

This was thanks to Jermis Rios who won two titles - similarly to Kilic - in the snatch and overall.

Rios was a comfortable winner with a lift of 81kg in the snatch, finishing ahead of Ukraine's Andrii Revko and Czech Republic's Alexandr Dzobak, who both had a score of 78kg, but the Ukrainian won the silver on countback.

However, Dzobak took Rios to task in the clean and jerk to win the gold ahead of the Peruvian by 103kg to 102kg.

Saudi Arabia's Ali Majed Kalitit was a distant third on 95kg, having recovered from suffering technical issues in his snatch.

Overall, Rios claimed gold ahead of the closing Dzobak and the consistent Revko.

Peru won two medals in the women's 45kg thanks to the clean and jerk performance of Paola Saldarriaga, also picking up the overall title in a late surge.

However, the first gold medal of the category went to the Philippines' Jean Ramos in the snatch, finishing ahead of Naomi Montes of Mexico and Saldarriaga, who picked up the bronze.

The clean and jerk was where the Peruvian was more at home, finishing ahead of Poland's Oliwia Drzazga and Colombia's Alejandra Alvarez - making it five different medallists in the two events.

This performance - and the absence of Ramos on the podium - propelled Saldarriaga up to the top of the overall standings ahead of the Filipino lifter who finished second and Montes - who twice failed on her last attempts, which cost her the victory.

Finally, the men's 55kg rounded off the night with Kazakhstan's Ablay Auyelkhanov picking up wins in the overall and clean and jerk.

However, it was Uzbekistan's Khusinboy Matrasulov who shined first, having won the snatch in a tight contest with bronze medallist Auyelkhanov and silver medallist Florin Cosmin Krupla of Romania.

This would be the last of Matrasulov's glory after he faded in the clean and jerk - which was dominated by the Kazakh.

This handed Auyelkhanov the clean and jerk gold medal as well as the overall title, finishing well ahead of Jose Manuel Poox of Mexico in the clean and jerk, who in turn was far in front of Krupla.

Poox's efforts in the second event gave him the overall bronze, snatching it away from Matrasulov in the last lift, while Krupla won another silver medal.

Peru sit top of the medal standings with five golds ahead of Turkey and Kazakhstan who both have two each.

Czech Republic, the Philippines and Uzbekistan all have one gold each too.
