University of Coimbra says its participation in the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Healthy Campus programme complements existing efforts to support the health and well-being of students.

The university was one of the first to be certified by FISU as part of the Healthy Campus initiative.

Created following the research of 30 world health experts, the project aims to encourage physical activity and healthy choices at universities.

The programme was launched on May 12, following a successful pilot last year.

A total of 42 universities worldwide, representing more than 30 countries, have joined the project to date.

University of Coimbra Rector Professor Amílcar Falcão said the programme reinforced the work conducted by the university, which was founded back in 1290.

"The University of Coimbra places high value on the health and well-being of its community, a fact that can be confirmed, for example, with our 17th position in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for good health and well-being," Professor Falcão said.

"The FISU Healthy Campus project reinforces the work already developed by us and enhances the transversality between the various sectors of the university.

"People are the most valuable resource at the University of Coimbra and their well-being is one of my personal commitments. In view of the current COVID-19 reality, people’s lives have changed drastically.

"Today, more than ever, this concern must be very present."

The University of Coimbra has also highlighted its strategic plan, which runs from 2019 to 2023.

The document has integrated all the Healthy Campus performance standards, which the university hopes will help it achieve the plans' aims.

The university hosted the European Universities Games in 2018.

FISU director of Healthy Campus and University Relations, Fernando Parente, said the organisation was proud to have the University of Coimbra as a member of the project.

"It is a matter of great pride for us to have an esteemed institution like the University of Coimbra not only join our programme but in fact, lead the way by earning one of the first certifications," said Parente.

"The university’s students union is the oldest in Portugal and also one that has always been very actively involved in sports."
