Belgium’s Eli Iserbyt earned victory in the men’s elite race at the European Cyclo-Cross Championships in 's-Hertogenbosch.

The Netherlands had dominated the women’s race yesterday, but today’s men’s competition saw the Belgian riders come to the fore.

Iserbyt led their charge during the 26-kilometre race, which saw riders complete nine laps of a 2.9km circuit.

The 23-year-old was joined by compatriot Michael Vanthourenhout at the front as the halfway mark approached.

The duo were followed by a chasing pack led by The Netherlands' Lars van der Haar, but the group proved unable to close the gap.

Iserbyt opened a gap to Vanthourenhout in the final two laps of the race and gradually pulled further away from his rival.

He remained clear to seal a maiden European title at senior level in a time of 1 hour 4min 28sec.

It represented an upgrade on the silver medal he earned last year, when he finished as runner-up to Mathieu van der Poel.

The Dutch rider did not defend his title this year.

Vanthourenhout held on to finish as the runner-up at 16 seconds down, with Van der Haar ending six seconds further adrift to complete the podium.

Belgium’s dominance of the race was highlighted by seven of their riders finishing in the top 10.

The women’s under-23 race was also held today.

Puck Pieterse emerged as the winner, with the Dutch rider completing the 14.6km race in a time of 40:56.

She finished with an eight-second winning margin to Hungary’s Kata Blanka Vas.

The podium was completed by The Netherlands’ Manon Bakker, who finished in 41:06.
