Los Angeles Dodgers player Justin Turner has escaped punishment after he returned to the field to celebrate his team's World Series triumph shortly after testing positive for coronavirus.

Turner was removed from game six of the World Series between the Dodgers and the Tampa Bay Rays last month after word reached the team that he had returned a positive COVID-19 test.

The third baseman watched from a room inside the Globe Life Field stadium as the Dodgers wrapped up a 4-2 series victory to earn their first World Series title for 32 years.

Despite news of his positive test, Turner went back onto the field and celebrated the win with his team mates and his wife, instead of going into isolation.

The 35-year-old was seen embracing his fellow Dodgers players and was photographed without a mask.

Major League Baseball investigated his conduct but commissioner Rob Manfred said Turner would not face any sanctions and no further action would be taken.

Turner said he was "under the impression that team officials did not object to my returning to the field for a picture with my wife" but apologised for his behaviour.

"However, what was intended to be a photo capturing the two of us turned into several greetings and photos where I briefly and unwisely removed my mask," he said.

"In hindsight, I should have waited until the field was clear of others to take that photo with my wife.

"I sincerely apologise to everyone on the field for failing to appreciate the risks of returning to the field."

Manfred said the matter was now closed.

"We all have made mistakes as we navigated these unprecedented challenges and have tried to learn from those mistakes so they are not repeated," he said.

"With this in mind I am closing this matter by applauding Justin for accepting responsibility, apologising and making a commitment to set a positive example going forward."
