More than 400 athletes from 62 countries are set to compete in the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Online Youth World Cup.

So far, 402 athletes have signed up for the IWF Online Youth World Cup, set to run from November 11 to 18.

The event has been organised by the Peruvian Weightlifting Federation.

It will be held in place of the IWF Youth World Championships, which were due to be staged on the same dates in Lima.

Competition was cancelled in August as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The IWF and local organisers consulted before the cancellation was decided upon "with great sadness", to prioritise "the health and safety of our young lifters".

Twenty Polish lifters have been registered for the Online Youth World Cup - more than from any other nation - while there are 18 Peruvians set to compete.

A number of sports have resorted to online events to ensure athletes are still able to compete during the global health crisis, but weightlifting is one that particularly lends itself to remote competition.
