Paris 2024 will encourage youngsters to get active for at least 30 minutes per day during next year's Olympic and Paralympic Week.

The week has been celebrated in schools across France on four occasions since the capital announced its candidacy for the 2024 Games.

It will next be held between February 1 and 6 next year, with the Paris 2024 Organising Committee hoping to battle back against childhood obesity.

"Paris 2024 cannot solve everything," said Marie Barsacq, the impact and heritage director of Paris 2024, to L'Équipe.

"But the Committee has a role to play in encouraging the French, and especially young people, to move more.

"The next Olympic and Paralympic Week will therefore be an opportunity to put the spotlight on a daily 30 minutes of physical activity."

France's education and sports ministries have got on board with the half-hour initiative and plan to introduce it to schools.

Four actions - running, jumping, throwing and dancing - will be encouraged.

It is hoped that the 30 minutes will be possible without negatively impacting upon the rest of a pupil's studies.

Exercising in school has also taken on more importance as many clubs have been shut due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Sport has a positive impact on our society and it must be cultivated," said Astrid Guyart, a fencer who has won six World Championship medals and now writes books for children.

"More than winning medals, it is a way of building yourself as an individual.

"The school remains the last space where children can practice because the clubs are closed."

This year's Olympic and Paralympic Week took place in February before the COVID-19 crisis prompted a national shutdown.

Around 2,500 educational institutions took part with 400,000 students reached.

Two hundred athletes also got involved by visiting schools and meeting students.

Paris is due to host the Summer Olympics exactly 100 years after it last did so in 1924.

The city was named as host of the 2024 Games in 2017 as part of the historic double award which saw Los Angeles given the 2028 edition.
