Olympic medallists Jonny Brownlee and Vicky Holland have been confirmed in Britain's triathlon team for the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, alongside newly crowned world champion Georgia Taylor-Brown and Jess Learmonth.

The British Olympic Association confirmed the selection of their first four triathletes for the Games, with British Triathlon saying it is confident it has two male and three female quota places secured.

Alistair Brownlee, the men's Olympic champion at London 2012 and Rio 2016, will be among the athletes seeking to secure selection ahead of the Games.

His brother Jonny will head to Tokyo 2020 hoping to secure gold, having earned bronze at London 2012 and silver four years later in Rio.

"For me the medal that is missing is the gold medal," Jonny Brownlee said.

"If I can go to Tokyo and get a gold medal that would be absolutely brilliant.

"I would not be going if I did not believe I could win a gold medal.

"I would love to be on the start-line with Alistair.

"I have been very fortunate to have raced my two Olympic Games with Alistair.

"Having Alistair on the team would hopefully improve my chances of winning a medal as we like to race in a similar way, but I'll believe like I did in Rio and London that I can beat him on the start line.

"We don't know exactly what the selection criteria will be because COVID has changed everything, but I am sure if Alistair is fit he has a good chance of being on the team."

Holland will also be competing at her third Olympic Games.

The 2018 world champion became Britain's first female Olympic medallist in triathlon when she earned bronze at Rio 2016.

Taylor-Brown triumphed at the World Championships in Hamburg in September, after securing bronze back in 2019.

Learmonth won six medals on the World Triathlon Series circuit in 2019, as well as earning silver at the Grand Final in Lausanne.

Mike Cavendish, British Triathlon's performance director and Team GB's triathlon team leader, said the announcement provided certainty for the athletes selected ahead of the rescheduled Games.

Cavendish said the quartet had been selected towards the end of 2019, following performances at the test event and the World Triathlon Series.

"I want to extend my massive congratulations to Jess, Georgia, Vicky and Jonny, who have been selected so far," Cavendish said.

"Whether it is your first or third Games, selection for the Olympics is a huge achievement.

"These athletes have performed exceptionally well to get to this point.

"We have undoubtedly selected four of the best triathletes in the world.

"We want to provide the best prepared and supported team on the start line and we felt preparing certainty to those selected and not selected so far will help focus everyone on the job at hand."

Cavendish expressed hope Britain could yet secure three male berths for Tokyo 2020.

As it stands, British Triathlon would expect to choose between Alistair Brownlee, Alex Yee, Tom Bishop and Gordon Benson for the final male spot.

"Alistair is still very much in contention and hopefully we will have a full series of racing next year," Cavendish said.

"He along with the other male athletes we have will be looking to earn selection.

"A fully fit and firing Alistair Brownlee would absolutely be on our radar when we get to our final selections at some point next year."

The men's race in Tokyo is scheduled to take place on July 26 next year, with the women's following a day later.

The races will be held at the Odaiba Marine Park.

Tokyo 2020 will also see the Olympic debut of the mixed relay triathlon event, which is scheduled for July 31.

The race will feature two male and two female members of the British team.
