Shandong finished top of the medals table at the Chinese Taekwondo Championships, which were held in Wuxi and saw 16 titles awarded.

In all, Shandong won three gold medals, five silvers and three bronzes, edging out Jiangsu - who won three gold medals and six in total - to be the most successful province, Xinhua, China's state-run news agency, reports.

Song Zhaoxiang of Beijing - a bronze medallist at the 2019 World Championships - was among the winners, taking the men's under-87-kilogram title.

Hu Fangtao in the men's under-58kg, Yin Yuanhong in the women's under-57kg and Tan Jingwen in the men's under-74kg were Shandong's trio of champions.

More than 300 athletes, representing 33 teams, took part in the competition.

Chinese Taekwondo Association President Guan Jianmin was satisfied with the event, which was divided into two stages.

"This unusual schedule is important for athletes to learn how to deal with physical fitness and injuries," Guan said.

No country won more medals than China's seven at last year's World Championships, held in Manchester.

With two golds, two silvers and three bronzes, China finished third in the medals table.

Wuxi is due to hold the 2021 World Taekwondo Championships.

China also won two Olympic gold medals in taekwondo at Rio 2016, finishing behind only South Korea in the sport's medals table.
