Christian Brodie is to chair of the new Commonwealth Sport Foundation (CSF), with Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson to serve as interim vice-chair.

The CSF, the charitable wing of the Commonwealth Sport Movement, was launched in August.

It has been promised that it will focus on five key areas; youth empowerment, equal rights, historical injustices, sustainability and finally small and island states.

Brodie, who will chair the CSF, is a former lawyer and corporate financier with experience of working on international development projects.

Previous non-executive chair roles include at Pentathlon GB, the South East Local Enterprise Partnership, the University of Sussex and the Student Loans Company.

Baroness Grey-Thompson is one of Britain's most successful Paralympians, having won 11 Paralympic gold medals and seven world titles across a storied wheelchair racing career.

She represented Wales at the Manchester 2002 and Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Since 2010, she has been a member of the House of Lords, Britain's un-elected Upper House of Parliament, and is also chair of ukactive, which promotes the interests of gyms and leisure centres, as well as active lifestyles.

The next edition of the Commonwealth Games is set to take place in Birmingham in 2022, and Baroness Grey-Thompson is due to hold the position of interim vice-chair until the conclusion of those Games.

"This Foundation has a unique opportunity to shape and steer the impact of Commonwealth sport in an urgent time of need and priority," Baroness Grey-Thompson said.

"In the lead up to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, I am delighted to have the opportunity to undertake this role in helping to support the vision of the Commonwealth Sport Movement.

"I look forward to being joined on the Board of Trustees by colleagues that will bring diversity of voice and required skills specialisation necessary to ensure we are truly a pan-Commonwealth Foundation that will harness the power of sport to change lives, and the power of our community to change the world."

The recruitment process for Trustees has now begun, with the deadline for applications December 4.

The CSF said it hopes to have the Board of Trustees in place by the end of March 2021.

The formation of the CSF is "hugely important given the context of our shared history", according to Brodie.

"I am honoured to have been appointed as chair for this brand-new charitable foundation, supporting the Movement's wider vision to create peaceful, sustainable and prosperous communities across the Commonwealth through sport," the former UBS Investment Bank vice-chair said.

"The Foundation has the exciting potential to harness the power of Commonwealth Sport in order to positively impact every citizen across our 72 nations and territories.

"This is hugely important given the context of our shared history, our global geographic reach and our defining diversity."
