Gemke, who was seeded seventh, was on track to beat his higher ranked opponent when he won the opening game.

But Antonsen edged a tense second game before closing out the decider to triumph 18-21, 21-19, 21-12 at the Odense Sports Park.

Antonsen became the first Danish man to win the annual tournament since Jan Ø. Jørgensen’s victory 10 years ago.

The women’s singles final was also a closely-fought encounter with Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara holding her nerve to win in straight games.

Reigning Olympic champion Carolina Marin of Spain pushed the second seed hard in each game, but Okuhara took the title, winning 21-19, 21-17.

Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge of England came through a tough three-game battle to clinch the men’s doubles crown.

Russians Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov took the first game but Ellis and Langridge fought back to win 20-22, 21-17, 21-18.

The all-Japanese women’s doubles final was also hotly contested with top seeds Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota doing enough to see off Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara 21-10, 16-21, 21-18.

Germany secured their first gold medal at the tournament since 1971 after the mixed doubles pairing of Mark Lamsfuß and Isabel Herttrich came from a game down to win.

Chris and Gabrielle Adcock, of England, went ahead before Lamsfuß and Herttrich responded in impressive fashion to triumph 18-21, 21-11, 21-14.
