Mazen Hesham's impressive run at the Egyptian Open continued as he reached his first quarter-final at a Professional Squash Association Platinum event in almost 18 months, while Tarek Momen and Nour El Sherbini also advanced to the last eight.

The Egyptian, who is set to begin military service following the event, overcame a higher-ranked opponent for the second round running, having knocked out defending champion and compatriot Karim Abdel Gawad in round two.

India's Saurav Ghosal was Hesham's opponent in round three, but the world number 13 was on the wrong end of an 11-8, 11-9 11-8 scoreline.

Hesham said afterwards: "I’m enjoying myself, playing in front of the Pyramids in Egypt, what else do you need?"

He'll face compatriot Marwan ElShorbagy - another straight-games winner - in the quarter-finals.

Sixth seed ElShorbagy beat Nathan Lake of England 11-8, 11-4, 11-9.

Another Egyptian, world champion Momen, reached the last eight with an 11-9, 11-8, 13-11 triumph over Mexican César Salazar.

Peru's Diego Elías awaits, following an 11-5, 5-11, 12-10, 11-6 win against Frenchman Grégoire Marche.

Eighth seed Joelle King - a reigning double Commonwealth Games champion - was the biggest name to fall in the women's contest today.

She had been two games up against Salma Hany, but the home player fought back to win 6-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-7.

That match lasted 68 minutes, making it the longest of the day.

Fourth seed Nour El Tayeb needed only 22 minutes to beat Nadine Shahin 11-5, 11-5, 11-6  in an all-Egyptian battle.

She will play Hany in the quarter-finals.

Requiring one minute more, second seed El Sherbini - who won a world title here in front of the Great Pyramid of Giza last year - beat Canada's Danielle Letourneau 11-1, 11-5, 11-5.

Her last-eight opponent will be Joshna Chinappa of India.

Chinappa saw off a fightback from Egyptian Farida Mohamed to win their third-round match 11-7, 11-6, 7-11, 10-12, 11-8.

The quarter-finals begin tomorrow, but those who reached the last eight today will not be in action until Thursday (October 15).
