The World Curling Federation (WCF) has announced the cancellation of its 2020 World Mixed Doubles Qualification Event due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

This event was scheduled to take place in Erzurum in Turkey in December, with teams then qualifying for the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship from there.

"We are very disappointed that we have been forced to cancel our last remaining Championship of 2020," Kate Caithness, President of the WCF, said.

"The Federation staff and the local organisers had worked tirelessly to put everything in place in the hope that this Championship could go ahead, but with the resurgence in coronavirus cases around the world, which has caused further impact to international travel restrictions, that is no longer an option.

"The second-half of our current season will feature vitally important events for Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games qualification, and I want the curling family to know that we are continuing to diligently work behind the scenes to ensure that international curling can return safely."

Now, the 2021 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship is set to feature those teams who qualified for the 2020 edition.

The WCF has stated its in discussion with the International Olympic Committee to evaluate the impact that the cancellation could have on the qualification for mixed doubles at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in BEijing.

Currently, the 2021 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship is scheduled to take place from April 24 to May 1 2021, although no host has been selected yet.

This is the latest cancellation from the WCF, who had to call off the World Mixed Curling Championship in August while three Continental Championships, including the European Championships, were also axed.
