Polish teenager Iga Swiatek produced the biggest shock of the French Open so far as she comprehensively beat women's top seed Simona Halep in the fourth round of the year's final Grand Slam.

The 19-year-old continued her record of not dropping a set in the tournament as she emphatically defeated Halep 6-1 6-2 in the first match of the day on Court Philippe Chatrier.

The Romanian was considered the favourite for the women's singles title prior to the event and like her opponent had yet to drop a set before today's match.

However, she was outplayed and overpowered by an impressive Swiatek who produced a performance showing maturity beyond her years to book her place in the last eight at Roland Garros.

Swiatek will now play Martina Trevisan in the last eight, after the Italian qualifier produced the day's other big upset in the women's singles competition.

Trevisan beat Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands, the fifth seed, 6-4 6-4 in a match played on Court Suzanne Lenglen at the same time as Halep was in action on the main court.

The highest remaining women's seed is Elina Svitolina, with the Ukrainian third seed, producing a dominant display to beat France's Caroline Garcia 6-1 6-3.

The day's other women's fourth round match saw Nadia Podoroska, a qualifier from Argentina, come from a set down to beat Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic 2-6 6-2 6-3.

In the men's draw, Rafael Nadal of Spain continued his quest for a 13th French Open title by swatting aside American Sebastian Korda, who is ranked just outside the world's top 200, 6-1 6-2 6-2.

Nadal will now face Italian Jannik Sinner, who continued his fairytale run by knocking out Germany's Alex Zverev, the sixth seed, 6-3 6-3 4-6 6-3.

Zverev claimed in a media conference after the match that he was "sick, had a fever and should not have played" the match.

Men's third seed Dominic Thiem survived a scare on route to reaching the last eight as he was taken to five sets before ending the run of 20-year-old Frenchman Hugo Gaston.

After the Austrian took the first two sets 6-4, the wildcard claimed the next two 7-5 6-3.

The US Open champion called on the battling qualities that helped him to a first Grand Slam title in New York last month, as he eventually prevailed in three and a half hours 6-4 6-4 5-7 3-6 6-3.

Thiem will now play Argentina's Diego Schwartzman in the quarter-finals, with 12th seed Schwartzman beating Italy's Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets 6-1 6-3 6-4.

The fourth round of the men's and women's singles is scheduled to conclude tomorrow.
