The Wheelchair Fencing European Championships have been pushed back by a year to 2021 and moved from Britain to Hungary in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) confirmed the event would be held in Eger in Hungary instead of the British town of Hatfield.

Competition at the event, which forms part of the wheelchair fencing qualification system for the postponed Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, is scheduled to run from May 14 to 17.

In a statement, the IWAS said it had made the decision to move to a "more well-established, compact and familiar wheelchair fencing venue in the Eger Hotel and Park" following a review of plans for the event.

IWAS President Rudi van den Abbeele said the organisation remains "keen to host major competitions in new locations".

"Given the uncertainty around the length and progress of the COVID-19 pandemic around the world, we want to ensure that we make the most sensible and safe choices possible for athletes and teams," he said.

"We therefore revisited a strong bid from Hungary to host a World Cup in 2021 with an experienced Local Organising Committee at the Eger Hotel and Park, where all accommodation and competition is contained within one building.

"Hatfield would have been a great stage at any other time.

"However in this case, with multiple team hotels and Championship venues, we thought it more prudent to move the competition to somewhere more self-contained.

"The Europeans will still be a great showcase for the sport with three months to go until the Paralympics."

This year's International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation World Games in Thailand have been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
