This year's Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) General Assembly will be held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic, the umbrella body has announced.

The GAISF had planned to stage the event on November 10 in a hybrid form, with some attending in person and others joining the meeting remotely.

But the organisation has moved the entire meeting online "due to the evolving situation of the COVID-19 pandemic".

In a statement, GAISF said a virtual General Assembly "would be the best way for the organisation to meet its duty of ensuring the meeting is equally accessible to all members".

The Alliance of Independent Recognised Members of Sport (AIMS) has also decided to hold its General Assembly virtually because of the coronavirus crisis.

The General Assemblies of GAISF and AIMS typically take place as part of the SportAccord World Sport and Business Summit, but this year's event was cancelled due to COVID-19.

The GAISF membership is due to consider applications by the Association of Paralympic Sports Organisations and the World Transplant Games Federation to become associate members at the General Assembly.

An application for full membership from the International Federation of Teqball will also be voted on during the meeting.

The GAISF becomes the latest body in the Olympic Movement to stage its General Assembly virtually as a result of travel restrictions and other measures imposed by Governments across the world in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The International Olympic Committee held its first virtual Session earlier this year, while FIFA and the International Table Tennis Federation have recently staged remote meetings of their full membership.

Others set to follow suit before the end of the year include the International Boxing Association and World Sailing, both of which will hold their Presidential elections virtually for the first time.
