The Sports Data Warehouse project was originally pursued by the Association for Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF), with the aim of making sports data widely available.

The project is now owned by the IOC, which has delegated the operational delivery and daily management to the Olympic Channel.

It is claimed the project will serve as a comprehensive database of historical sports results and will integrate data made available by ASOIF and the Association of International Olympic Winter Sports Federation (AIOWF) members, as well as other sports organisations.

The FIS has become part of the project after signing a cooperation agreement with the IOC and the Olympic Channel.

The governing body say the project will allow for historical results, live results data, athlete biographies and calendar data to be aggregated, verified and organised in a meaningful way.

The FIS said this will increase the ease the access to this information from and to federations, athletes, Organising Committees or other stakeholders of the Olympic Movement.

"The project will significantly improve data standards integration and data quality for future Olympic Games and competitions hosted by the participants," the FIS said.

"It can auto-detect and remove duplications and also bring different sources together through an easy connection – either in-house or to any other third-party platform.

"It is carried out with in strict compliance with any applicable data protection laws and regulations, specifically including the EU General Data Protection Regulation.

"In the future the Sports Data Warehouse will be able to grant access to athletes in order for them to see and easily integrate their own data.”

As part of the project, display schedules of sporting competitions and its results were developed and tested during past Youth Olympic Games.

The schedules can be embedded into existing websites of National Olympic Committees, National Federations or athletes.
