The AWF said it aims to follow efforts by the International, Pan American, and Uzbekistan Weightlifting Federations in recent months.

Each have organised virtual events to enable competition to continue amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Australia’s Pedro Sanchez, Bowen Stuart and Phil Maunder are among those to have participated in the virtual competitions.

The AWF says its competition - the AWF Online Cup - will follow a format similar to a championship event.

Competition will take place over a video platform from November 2.

Each of Australia’s eight states and territories will enter teams of up to 10 men and 10 women across the IWF bodyweight categories.

The AWF says the competition will enable weightlifters in various locations to compete head-to-head in real time.

The format is hoped to provide competition experiences for both athletes and coaches.

The national governing body suggested online weightlifting competition potentially could have a place within the sport after the coronavirus pandemic passes.
