Egyptian duo Mohamed ElShorbagy and Nour El Tayeb won the first Professional Squash Association (PSA) Tour titles up for grabs since the coronavirus-enforced break, triumphing at the Manchester Open.

World number one ElShorbagy faced compatriot Karim Abdel Gawad in the men's final.

Gawad took the first game 11-9, but would not win another as ElShorbagy's class shone through and he secured a 42nd PSA title - moving him to outright fifth place on the list of men's players with the most PSA tournament victories.

ElShorbagy won games two and three 11-8 and 11-7, before edging the fourth via a tiebreak 13-11.

"The players have had to adapt but I am just really glad that the end result was the same for me," 2017 world champion ElShorbagy said.

"I wanted to win the title, I wanted to challenge myself, even with all the things we had to deal with differently.

"However, I think that squash was the winner, not just one player, we gave so many quality matches for the fans watching back at home."

El Tayeb faced Camille Serme of France in the women's final, and just like ElShorbagy triumphed in four games after dropping the first.

Serme was the number one seed and is ranked third in the world - one place above El Tayeb.

The 27-year-old Egyptian won 3-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-3, winning in somewhat anti-climactic fashion as she had seven championship balls.

"I am very happy that I have won here to give me some confidence that I can play with the top girls," El Tayeb said afterwards.

"I hadn’t been playing well for the last six or seven months before the lockdown, so I am happy to be playing some decent squash."

Matches were played without fans present in Manchester due to the global health crisis.

Cairo is next due to stage the PSA World Tour Finals, to be contested by the top eight players on the Road to Egypt standings, from September 28 to October 3.
