International Sambo Federation (FIAS) President Vasily Shestakov has led a team of sambo players on the television programme One Hundred to One in Moscow.

The programme is based on the American show Family Feud and has been shown on the Russia-1 television channel since 1998.

Shestakov captained the sambo team on the programme, with athletes Marina Mokhnatkina, Vyacheslav Vasilevsky, Denis Goltsov and Vadim Nemkov also featuring.

The FIAS President said he hoped the appearance of the sambo team will help to make the sport even more popular.

"We watch this game with the whole family, so it was very interesting to try our hand at it," Shestakov said.

"I think we managed to contribute to the popularisation of our sport.

"Many people love the game One hundred to One, so I think it was very useful to show them our famous athletes, champions."

The sambo team faced competition from Russia’s beach soccer national squad on the programme.

"When I watched this game on TV, it seemed to me that I could give more correct answers," said Vasilevsky, a six-time world champion in combat sambo.

"And when this happens in real time, things get a little more complicated.

"Many answers immediately come to mind, but you only need to choose one.

"At this point, you begin to doubt which option is more appropriate.

"In addition, there is a slight fear of letting the team down.

"But in general it is very interesting, and this game pushed me to engage in intellectual development even more closely."

FIAS says the programme, hosted by Alexander Gurevich, will be shown on television soon.
