Dutch cyclist Marianne Vos snatched victory on the sixth stage of the Giro Rosa as compatriot Annemiek van Vleuten maintained her overall lead.

The former Olympic champion crossed the line in 2 hours 14min 24sec to claim her third stage win in this year's event.

She finished just in front of Britain's Hannah Barnes and Belgium's Lotte Kopecky.

The route from Torre del Greco to Vulcano Buono Nola was shortened due to a bridge collapsing, with the cyclists competing over 89 kilometres.

Russia's Mariia Novolodskaia took the lead with 13km to go, but crashed in a tight 180-degree turn 4km from the finish.

Van Vleuten continues to lead the race overall.

She is 1:52 ahead of Kasia Niewiadoma of Poland, with fellow Dutch cyclist Anna van der Breggen off the pace by two minutes.

Competition continues tomorrow with the seventh stage.

Participants are set to complete a 112.5km route from Nola to Maddaloni.
