American four-time major winner Brooks Koepka has withdrawn from the upcoming US Open due to injury.

Koepka, who has not played since he missed the cut at the Wyndham Championship in August, confirmed on Twitter that he would miss the US Open at Winged Foot Golf Club in New York, which begins on September 17.

The 30-year-old former world number one has struggled with persistent hip and knee injuries this year.

"Unfortunately, I have decided to withdraw from next week's US Open," Koepka said.

"I'm looking forward to getting healthy and competing at 100 per cent again very soon."

Koepka, a two-time US Open winner, had reportedly planned to compete at the event before deciding he is not fit enough.

He began the year as the world's top-ranked player but has slipped to eighth as a result of injury problems.

Koepka took part in the PGA Championship last month - where he was aiming for a third consecutive title - and had challenged for the lead before slipping away on the final day.

The American also required treatment from a medical assistant during the tournament.

"It's not the knee," Koepka said when he missed the cut at the Wyndham Championship.

"This is physical.

"I know how to do it, I can do it, I just physically can't do it.

"My golf swing is fine.

"If I can physically do it, then yes, everything's fine."

This year's US Open will be held without spectators because of the coronavirus pandemic.

It had been due to be played from June 18 to 21 before being postponed due to the COVID-19 crisis.
