Sam Craven_with_Parapans_gold_medal_November_2011November 19 - The United States leapt to the top the athletics medals table at the Parapan American Games after a superb day at the Telmex Athletics Stadium in Guadalajara which saw them claim six golds.

In a Games full of broken records, a world record was set by Cuban Leonardo Diaz in the day's first event, the men's discus F54/55/56, with a throw of 44.36 metres.

Mexico's Leslie Mendoza then clinched the women's shot put F20, before the American dominance began as Sam Craven (pictured) claimed the gold in the shot put F32/33/34.

Tanner Gers won gold in the long jump F11, and Chris Hammer won gold in the men's 1500 metres T46, whilst Tommy Chasanoff set a record in the men's 800m T36 of 2min 30.90sec.

The sixth gold the US picked up came from Amberlynn Weber in the 100m T54, coming just ahead of Mexico's Yazmith Bataz and Gloria Sanchez.

In the women's shot put F54/55/56, two Americas records were set as Colombia's Yanive Torres Martinez claimed the 54 record with a 6.18m throw, also claiming the gold overall, and silver medallist Angela Madsen of the USA broke the F56 record with an effort of 8.14 metres.

Mexican Fernando Sanchez Nava gave the home support reason to cheer with victory in the men's 400m T54, and another record was set in the men's shot put F12 with Colombian Edwin Rodriguez Gonzales throwing 11.98m.

Fernando del Rosario Gonzalez took gold in the men's discus F57/58, setting yet another record with 50.51m, and Venezuela grabbed a gold in the men's 1500m T20 through Rene Rafael Norono Verdejo.

Brazil took the final two gold medals, through Lucas Prado in the men's 200m T11, and Thierb Siqueira in the men's 200m T12, but it was not enough to prevent them being overtaken by the USA in the track and field medal count.

The USA has 15 gold medals in track and field, with eight silver and eight bronze, and Brazil are just behind with 11 gold, 12 silver and five bronze.

Brazil still leads the overall standings though, with 40 gold, 30 silver and 34 bronze, whilst the US is behind on 28 gold, 23 silver and 15 bronze.

Hosts Mexico remain third with 24 gold, 32 silver and 24 bronze.
