Naomi Osaka remains on course for a second US Open title in three years after she beat American Shelby Rogers to reach the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows in New York City.

The Japanese star, seeded fourth, proved too strong for Rogers in a dominant 6-3, 6-4 victory on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Osaka will play 28th seed Jennifer Brady of the United States for a place in the final.

The 2018 US Open winner took control of her quarter-final with Rogers, ranked 93 in the world, dropping just two points in her first three service games before breaking her opponent in the sixth game.

Rogers broke back – only the fourth time Osaka has been broken during the entire tournament – but the two-time Grand Slam champion responded immediately before closing out the first set.

Osaka also commanded the second set, which included three holds of serve to love and a solitary break as she booked her place in the last four with ease.

"I feel pretty good," said Osaka, who wore a face mask bearing the name of George Floyd, whose death at the hands of a white police officer in Minneapolis in May sparked global anti-racism protests, during her on-court interview.

"The scoreline might not suggest it but I've had a couple of really hard matches that made me really grateful to be in this position."

In the men's draw, Spanish 20th seed Pablo Carreño Busta overcame Canadian 12th seed Denis Shapovalov in a match that lasted almost four hours.

Carreño Busta put in a battling performance to secure a 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, 0-6, 6-3 win and set-up a meeting with Germany's Alexander Zverev in the last four.

He had reached this stage by default after Novak Djokovic's disqualification for inadvertently striking a line judge with a ball.
