Maria de_los_Angeles_Ortiz_with_gold_medal_at_Parapans_November_15_2011November 17 - Mexico's Maria de los Angeles Ortiz (pictured) broke her own shot put world record at the Parapan American Games, throwing 11.24 metres to beat her previous record by 3 centimetres, on a day when Brazil dominated in all the other disciplines in Guadalajara.


Jennifer Santos of Brazil took gold in the women's 200 metres T38 in a Games record time of 31.01sec, whilst the women's 200m T36 final was won by Nadia Schaus of Argentina in another record breaking time, 32.45, ahead of compatriot Yanina Andrea Martinez.

Salvador Hernandez gave the home crowd reason to cheer in the men's 100m T52, but it was Brazil's day and Ariosvaldo Fernandes Silva took the men's 100m T53, and Yohansson Nascimento then broke his own record to defeat Cuba's Raciel Gonzalez Isidora in 11.20.

Lucas Prado then broke a Games record to claim the 100m T11, whilst Brazil claimed a clean sweep of the medals in the 100m T11, with Terezinha Guilhermina finishing ahead of Julia Santos and Jerusa Geber dos Santos.

Brazil's final gold of the day came in the men's 400m T12 with Thierb Siqueira comfortably ahead of his rivals.

Chelsea McClammer of the United States narrowly beat another Mexican contender, Angela Andrea Dilone, in the women's 5,000m T54.

Cuba did not have to wait long for gold when Daineris Mijan won in the women's 100m T12, and they had yet more success in the men's 100m T13, with Luis Felipe Gutierrez taking gold.

Venezuela also claimed glory in the men's 100m T12 with Yoldani Silva and Vargas Argenis claiming a one-two finish for the South Americans, and then Omar Monterola beat another Americas record in 11.74 in the men's 100m T37.

Elkin Alonso_Serna_Parapans_November_16_2011In the day's final track event, Colombia claimed gold in the men's 5,000m T12 through Elkin Alonso Serna (pictured).

In the javelin, records were broken by Cuban Leonardo Diaz - 30.51m - in the F56 and Mexico's Juan Varela Osorio with 24.21m in the F55, whilst F54 thrower Luis Alberto Zepeda Felix took gold in the overall F54/55/56 event with a 26.13m throw.

Zena Cole broke another record in the F51/52/53 Discus to take gold, while Shirlene Coelho added yet another Brazilian gold with her throw in the F37/38 javelin.

In the Long Jump F46, Cuban Ettiam Calderon clinched gold, and Mexico's Mauro Maximo de Jesus won the F52/53 javelin.

With 32 gold medals, 24 silver and 24 bronze, Brazil are top of the medal table, while the United States are in second place with 18 gold, 17 silver and 10 bronze.

Hosts Mexico are in third place with 16 gold, 27 silver and 18 bronze.
