Wheelchair-rugby-5760413November 8 - Australia and Japan have qualified for the London 2012 Paralympic Games wheelchair rugby competition after coming first and second respectively at the Asia Oceania Championships in Icheon, South Korea.


Australia won the final between the two 59-41 to secure their spot at the Games, where they will hope to avenge a defeat to the United States in the final of the Beijing 2008 Paralympics.

They finished undefeated following the victory, but Japan secured a place in London next year after narrowly overcoming New Zealand 47-45 in the semi-finals.

New Zealand beat the hosts in the bronze medal match 62-44.

Australia and Japan join Canada, USA, Sweden, Belgium, France and hosts Britain at the Games next year.

The Australia coach, Brad Dubberley, was immediately looking to win gold in London and told the Australian Paralympic Committee.:"The guys will enjoy this, take a few weeks off and then come back ready to get back into hard training to give ourselves the best chance to win gold in London.

"We're certainly capable of winning that gold medal."
