International Rugby League (IRL) has postponed next year's Festival of World Cups due to uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Following consultations with the competing nations and Rugby League World Cup 2021 organisers, it was decided to reschedule the Festival of World Cups, originally due to take place in England in June and July.

The decision was made based on the uncertainty faced by countries trying to raise funds and organise their participation against the backdrop of the pandemic.

"It is unfortunate but understandable that member nations are unable to fully commit to these competitions at this stage," IRL chief executive Nigel Wood said.

"There is such a degree of uncertainty in the selection of squads and their fundraising efforts that it makes sense to move the events to a time when there will, be greater clarity.

"In addition, the organisers were being asked to make firm commitments to arrangements which they could not guarantee."

Discussions with members and the hosts will begin immediately to establish the best alternative arrangement.

A record number of countries expressed interest in the 2021 Festival of World Cups, which was scheduled for summer to avoid a clash with the Rugby League World Cup in England later in the year.

The event was due to include the first emerging nations tournament for women, and was also set to feature men's and women's tournaments for students and armed forces, as well as a men's Police World Cup.

"Clearly we are disappointed that the Festival of World Cups will not be able to go ahead as planned in 2021," Rugby League World Cup chief executive Jon Dutton said.

"We look forward to future plans being made that will support these tournaments to take place and enable the ongoing development of international Rugby League.

"As the Rugby League World Cup 2021 we are still committed to delivering the masters international event, in Newcastle, and physical disability rugby league event, in Warrington, in October 2021 as part of our wider programme."
