Mongolia and China claimed top honours in the first International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Under 17 Global Skills Challenges event.

China were champions in the FIBA U17 Women's Skill Challenge for 2020, while their northern neighbours took the men's title.

Mongolia was the only team to finish with a double-digit score after defeating Bulgaria 99-124 in the men's final with Bolor Erdene Gantsolmon being named the Tissot Most Valuable Player.

The FIBA U17 Skills Challenge 2020 pits the top under-17 national teams in the world against each other.

The teams compete remotely and only know the outcome of the match-up once both sides have completed their challenges and their game has been published.

Each match is performed by five players on each team and the challenge is completed when the fifth player concludes their lap.

The team with the lowest score wins the game.

Guinea finished third on the podium after beating Panama 113-118 in the third-place game.

Meanwhile, China scored a narrow one-point 118-119 victory against Poland in the women's title-decider, avenging a group phase defeat to the European nation.

Also picking up the Tissot MVP accolade was 14-year-old Li Qingyang who helped her team to victory, despite being the youngest player in the squad.

Spain claimed third place in a convincing 130-162 victory over Lithuania in the playoff match.

Including the regional qualifiers, held a week before the Global Challenges, a total of 73 teams representing 39 different National Federations competed in the FIBA U17 Skills Challenges in either the men's or women's event - or both.

The National Federations were able to bring their teams together for training camps, giving players the chance to represent their countries without having to travel internationally in the backdrop of the current global pandemic.

A total of 16 nations took part in both competitions with nations directly qualifying if they were due to compete at either age group FIBA World Cup.
