Poland had a great first day in the women's event©IKA

Poland's Julia Damasiewicz and France's Theo de Ramecourt have started well in the International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) Formula Kite Individual European Championships, currently sitting top of the women's and men's rankings respectively.

Both kiteboarders had close tussles with compatriots at the event in Puck in Poland, with the 15-year-old Damasiewicz finishing just ahead of fellow teenager Magdalena Woyciechowska in a strong one-two for the host nation.

Damasiewicz and Woyciechowska both ended today on four points, but Damasiewicz leads the standings by virtue of having won the final race.

Britain's Ellie Aldridge was a comfortable third, having scrapped back from a mediocre start to finish second and third in the last two rounds, giving her a score of nine.

France's Lauriane Nolot had to rely on the last three races after discarding her first result, but is in fourth on 13 points ahead of Poland's Nina Arcisz on 14 and then Alexia Fancelli of France on 15.

There were 26 competitors in the women's competition, hailing from other nations such as Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Russia and Slovenia.

Competition will take place daily, with the top 14 men and women competing in medal races on Sunday (August 23), the final day of the event.

The men's qualification is made up of two separate groups - with De Ramecourt and fellow Frenchman Axel Mazella both recording three wins and a second-place finish in their respective sets to finish as the top two after day one.

De Ramecourt won in round four, whereas Mazella was second, so the former has the edge in the standings.

Both have three points.

Germany's Florian Gruber finished the first day in third, having taken the first win in De Ramecourt's group before making the podium in his other three races to finish on six points.

Slovenian Toni Vodisek, who prevented Mazella having a perfect first day by winning in round four, sits fourth on seven points.

France's Maxime Nocher and Nico Parlier are fifth and sixth, both also having seven points.

Monaco's Alexander Ehlen sits in seventh on 10 points, ahead of Croatian Martin Dolenc and Mario Calbucci of Italy on 13.

Britain's Connor Bainbridge rounds off the top 10 on 15 points.
