Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ) has held a three-day Para-cycling development camp offering talent identification opportunities, as well as open and introductory sessions.

The development camp was held from August 1 to 3 and formed part of the Harvey Norman Para Sport National Development Programme.

The camp was held at the Avantidrome in Cambridge.

Participants were welcomed by PNZ Para Cycling National Development Coordinator Laura Thompson.

Cyclists participated in track sessions, workshops and presentations, which were supported by speakers from PNZ, High Performance Sport New Zealand (HPSNZ), and Cycling New Zealand.

The workshops were aimed at providing Para-athletes with the opportunity to develop off the bike, gain knowledge of Para cycling, and learn what it takes to perform at the elite level.

An Athlete Life workshop was presented by Judy Clement from HPSNZ, which focused on planning for balance and embracing change.

"One of my favourite parts about the camp was the wide variety of experiences involved – velodrome, road, and race," said Siobhan Terry, one of the talent ID riders participating.

"I also enjoyed getting to know the high-level Para cyclists and having the opportunity to learn from them.

"Overall, it was just a really positive experience."

The camp coincided with the unveiling of the Wall of Champions at the Avantidrome on August 3, which celebrates New Zealand’s most accomplished Para-cyclists.

A time trial series was also held following a skills session.

Para-cyclists competed in community rider, C Class, tandem, trike, and handcycle race categories.

PNZ said the camp aimed to provide an all-round development experience for selected development, as well as being open to the community and riders.

PNZ thanked the Para-cyclists, support crew, coaches, and staff for participating, as well as its partner Harvey Norman for supporting the camp.

A similar development camp was held in March this year.
