Spanish swimmer Ramiro Tossone has died at the age of 19 after a breath holding exercise in Malaga.

According to Spanish newspaper Malaga Today, Tossone was admitted to intensive care on Saturday (August 8).

He had initially been treated at the swimming pool, where CPR was performed following the incident at the Real Club Mediterraneo (RCM).

Tossone spent four days in intensive care, but was confirmed to have died yesterday.

"We are missing Ramiro Tossone," his former coach Xavi Casademont wrote on Twitter.

"A great of Malaga and Andalusian swimming.

"Always happy and always ready to support his colleagues.

"We will miss you Ramiro!! 

"A hug to the family and the RCM."

Tossone was reported to have regularly participated in Spanish Swimming Championship events, winning medals in age group categories.

Local newspaper Diario Sur reported Tossone had shown symptoms of drowning, according to club staff.
