It comes after the Chinese Government opted to cancel all sporting events for the remainder of 2020, with the exception of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic test events, as part of its fight against coronavirus.

Shanghai's Qizhong Garden Golf Club was due to host the third edition of the tournament between October 15 and 18, as part of the LPGA Tour.

"Given the current health concerns and significant travel restrictions put in place due to COVID-19, the LPGA can confirm that the 2020 Buick LPGA Shanghai, Oct 15 to 18 is cancelled further to the guidance of our partners, the China Golf Association," an LPGA statement said. 

"We thank SAIC-GM Buick, the China Golf Association, the CLPGA and IMG for all their efforts and very much look forward to returning to Qizhong Garden Golf Club, Shanghai in 2021." 

Only four LPGA Tour events were completed in the 2020 season before the coronavirus pandemic took hold.

Thirteen tournaments were subsequently cancelled, including a major, The Evian Championship in France.

Competition resumed between July 31 and August 2 with the LPGA Drive On Championship, and was followed by the Marathon Classic from August 6 to 9.

Both events were in Ohio in the United States and were won by American Danielle Kang.

The next event on the circuit is the Ladies Scottish Open, which is due to begin at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick tomorrow.

It is a warm-up tournament for the first of the four remaining majors this season, the Women's British Open which is scheduled for Scotland's Royal Troon Golf Club from August 20 to 23.

Kang, a major winner after her success at the Women's PGA Championship in 2017, also won both editions of the Buick LPGA Shanghai held to date.
