Mexican Taekwondo Federation President Professor Raymundo González said the organisation has remained "relaxed" during the COVID-19 pandemic as two of the country's athletes have qualified for Tokyo 2020.

Both Carlos Sansores and Briseida Acosta booked their places in Japan through the 2020 Pan American Taekwondo Olympic Qualification Tournament, which took place in March.

The event in Costa Rica was squeezed in shortly before the global shutdown of sport due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Sansores claimed one of two places available in the men's heavyweight over-80 kilograms class while Acosta qualified in the women's over-67kg.

Tokyo 2020 has now been delayed until next year because of COVID-19.

"If we are hit in the sense that we lost the face-to-face work, we are relaxed by the fact that we have already made qualifiers for the Olympics," said González, who was participating in a web chat with other representatives from Mexican sport.

"At least in our discipline we suspend all the national events that we had scheduled for the rest of the year, and we hope that health will improve and that the economy will be reactivated.

"Because in the end it is a circle that benefits everyone.

"Also, from the zoom platform the state teams come together and interact with the national teams, where they also share the training."

Acosta, the Pan American Games champion, was selected to represent Mexico in Costa Rica after winning a best-of-three series against compatriot María Espinoza, the Olympic gold medallist at Beijing 2008.
