University Sports Association of Serbia President Dejan Madic is hoping the country can host other major events after staging the postponed European Universities Games.

Belgrade had been due to host the event this year before it was pushed back to 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Madic said he would invite officials including International University Sports Federation (FISU) President Oleg Matytsin to the country to discuss hosting continental and global university competitions.

"When we are talking about international goals, as we have done so far, we would like to continue working on ideas with FISU and the European University Sports Association," Madic said.

"We have excellent cooperation with both, and I would like to invite [EUSA President] Adam Rocek and Oleg Matytsin to visit.

"Our goals are based on bringing the largest possible population of students to participate in all university sports activities."

Madic said helping to organise the European Universities Games was the main focus of the Serbian association.

"Given the global situation with the pandemic, the fifth European University Games were postponed to the summer of 2021, so now most of our energy is focused on organising this event," he added.

"It is our most significant project, during which we will have the opportunity to host over 6,500 athletes, 2,000 sports workers and 2,500 volunteers from all over Europe."
