This year's World Para Athletics European Championships in Poland has been pushed back to 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Bydgoszcz had been scheduled to host the competition from June 2 to 7.

The event at the Zdzislaw Krzyszkowiak Stadium was initially postponed by World Para Athletics on March 26 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

New dates for the Championships have not yet been confirmed by World Para Athletics, with an announcement expected later this year.

World Para Athletics and organisers will have to reschedule the event around the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, set to take place from August 24 to September 5 in 2021.

"World Para Athletics and the Organising Committee have continued to observe the development of the coronavirus pandemic together with stakeholders and have agreed to delay the event to next year," World Para Athletics said.

"The decision will give both organisations time to appropriately monitor the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak in Poland and different European countries, including the gradual return of sporting events."

Other major Para sports events to have been affected include the 2021 World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, delayed until 2022 in response to the pandemic and the postponement of the Paralympics.

According to latest figures, more than 6.6 million people have been infected with COVID-19, resulting in at least 389,000 deaths.
