Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour University has been launched to help college players transition to an elite level.

The PGA Tour announced the initiative to create a pipeline from college golf to its professional events.

From 2021, a PGA Tour university ranking list is set to be implemented.

Through the ranking, the top four-year National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I golfers at the conclusion of each year's NCAA Championship will be rewarded.

The top five finishers will be given a place on the Korn Ferry Tour.

The Korn Ferry Tour is the developmental tournament for the PGA Tour, and features professional golfers who have either not yet reached the PGA Tour, or who have done so but then failed to win enough FedEx Cup points to stay at that level.

"This is a massive opportunity for the Tour to make an impact," said Brendan von Doehren, the Korn Ferry Tour’s senior director of tournament and membership affairs, as reported by Golf Channel.

"We want to have the best players in the world come through our tours.

"This is going to really help in that."

Golf players who finish sixth to 15th in the rankings are set to be able to play full-time on the Mackenzie Tour, PGA Tour Latinoamerica or PGA Tour China.

PGA Tour University was launched following consultation with the NCAA, golf’s governing bodies, the PGA Tour’s players advisory council and coaches.

"With the level of immediate success from the top collegiate players in the last decade, our team has done extensive research over time and developed a plan to provide a pathway for those players as they begin their journeys into the professional ranks," said PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan.

"By focusing our efforts on players who have completed a minimum of four years, PGA Tour University will not deter from the college game while ensuring its graduates benefit from their maturity and experience."
