Martínez emerged as a top star of the Americas after winning the gold medal at the Parapan American Games in Lima in Peru in the K44 +58 kilogram category.

In winning the Parapan American Games, Martínez defeated the world champion from the same year, Débora Menezes of Brazil in the final.

She qualified at the start of the year for the Paralympics, which have been postponed to 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Now in lockdown in Chihuahua in Mexico with her family, she is preparing for her Paralympic debut as Para-taekwondo is set to be introduced at the Games for the first time.

The 26-year-old, speaking to Hidalgo Sport said: "Given what we are experiencing around the world, I am with a positive attitude, I try to be optimistic and patient, as well as being very disciplined in the aspect that the Paralympic Games were postponed and that right now we are all in our homes.

"We have to adapt to the situation and the spaces that exist and the team that we may or may not have."

She added about her training techniques during the lockdown: "I adapted in the garage of my parents a mat that he lent me, to be able to stick and train the technical thing.

"The one who helps me with technical training is my younger brother Luis."

Mexico have won a medal in martial arts, all in Para-judo, for the past three Games, including two gold medals at Rio 2016.
