An eleven-year-old taekwondo world champion has raised £1,330 ($1,610/€1,488) for the National Health Service by doing taekwondo kicks across her garden for thirteen consecutive days.

Liliana Herbert, a world champion in an under-14s team event alongside another member of her club, Humberside Taekwondo, in England, originally set herself the target of covering 72 lengths of her garden every day for ten consecutive days, as reported by Taekwondo Times.

However she subsequently upped the number of lengths covered and days that she undertook the challenge as a result of the support she received.

Her initial fundraising target was £500 ($605/€559) but Liliana has now raised more than double that, with all donations going towards helping the country's National Health Service (NHS) as it deals with the coronavirus pandemic.

Liliana was inspired by Captain Tom Moore, a former British Army officer who walked 100 laps of his garden ahead of his 100th birthday to raise funds for the NHS, with donations totalling more than £33million ($39 million/€36 million).

Liliana, who is currently a black stripe in the sport, described her taekwondo club as like "a family."

Writing on JustGiving ahead of her challenge Liliana said: "I really wanted to do something for our amazing NHS and what better way than to involve my passion which is taekwondo.

"My goal is to raise £500 to help towards our NHS and the wonderful staff that are fighting on the front line to keep me and everyone else safe.  The work they are doing is amazing!

"So I pledge, that everyday for 10 days straight, I will do 72 lengths of my garden doing side kicks, turning kicks and front kicks. My dad has worked out that by the end of it I will have done just over five kilometres worth of kicks."

As a result of the donations she received during the early days of her challenge, Liliana upped her game firstly increasing the lengths of her garden to 100 and then increasing the challenge by a further three days to a total of 13, meaning she ended up doing more than 10,000 kicks.

Liliana wrote as her challenge neared an end that her "legs ached and were very sore" but added that she was very grateful for all the support and donations she had received.
