American tennis player Taylor Fritz and TikTok personality Addison Rae have combined to win a charity virtual tennis tournament.

The charity event saw tennis players Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova, Kei Nishikori, Madison Keys, Kevin Anderson and Fritz partner with celebrities.

Players competed in the "Stay at Home Slam" on Nintendo Switch’s Mario Tennis Aces game.

The tournament was streamed on Facebook Gaming and the IMG Tennis Facebook page.

Fritz and Rae won the tournament, with the duo beating Nishikori and American DJ and music producer Steve Aoki 6-4 in the final.

The winners received $1 million (£800,000/€920,000) for a charity of their choice.

Fritz and Rae will donate to No Kid Hungry, which works to end child hunger in the United States.

Each participant also received $25,000 (£20,000/€23,000) for their chosen charity.

The tournament suffered some technical difficulties during the final.

Former world number one and seven-time Grand Slam winner John McEnroe commentated on each match.

He was joined by YouTube personality iJustine, also known as Justine Ezarik.

It is not the first virtual tennis competition run during the coronavirus pandemic.

Britain’s Andy Murray and The Netherlands’ Kiki Bertens were crowned winners of the virtual Madrid Open competition last week, with prize money set to help lower-ranked players and coronavirus relief efforts.
