The current season of the Mexican Baseball League (LMB) has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Competition was due to start on April 6, but was tentatively postponed until May 11.

It has now been indefinitely suspended as coronavirus cases in Mexico rise.

"Together we fight against this terrible pandemic," said LMB President Horacio de la Vega.

"We will win only if we work as a team - the league, the teams, the players, the umpires and all our fans.

"We will make decisions in the interest of our players, umpires, sponsors, commercial and institutional partners and all our collaborators."

De la Vega also revealed he was working with the Mexican Pacific League President Omar Canizales to analyse different scenarios.

There have been more than 5,000 cases of coronavirus in Mexico, with more than 330 deaths.

The Chinese Professional Baseball League became the first baseball league to start its season on Sunday (March 12) due to the low number of coronavirus cases in Taiwan.

Games are limited to just 500 people being the stadium - including players, umpires, coaches, officials and those working on the TV broadcast - meaning fans cannot go to matches.
