Spain's top basketball players past and present are raising money for the Spanish Red Cross by auctioning off their memorabilia, in a bid to help with relief against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Two of the nation's current players, men's national team forward Javier Beiran and women's national team guard Marta Xargay have contributed to the Red Cross initiative "This Medal is Yours" with both donating their gold medals to be auctioned off.

Beiran was part of the Spanish team who won the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Cup last year in China while Xargay won the FIBA Women's EuroBasket in Serbia.

Speaking to FIBA, Beiran spoke of his concern for the spread of the virus in his home nation which is one of the most affected in the world, with more than 166,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Spain, resulting in the deaths of over 16,900 people.

He said, "You're seeing people, all the medical workers, giving everything to keep us safe, so that is why we have to do something.

"And being sportsmen that are a little famous, the only thing we can do is help them on social media, donate to charities like the Red Cross, or doing whatever to help all the disadvantaged."

Others to donate to the This Medal is Yours campaign include 2006 FIBA Basketball World Cup MVP Pau Gasol and Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal.

Elsewhere Beiran's teammates have helped too include Spain guard Sergio Llull who donated his World Cup Final shirt from last year, while Victor Claver donated a ball signed by all the players after the nation's first FIBA EuroBasket title in 2009.

Women's national team star Alba Torrens gave her Spain top from the final of the FIBA Women's EuroBasket in 2017 when her team won the title and she was named MVP of the tournament.

The auction for all of the Spanish basketball memorabilia runs until April 17 and can be found here.
