The Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB) has created a technical programme for its athletes to help them with their training while they are in quarantine.

Psychological support will also be offered to athletes as part of the project, being coordinated by the CPB's sports science department.

It has been set up to ensure Brazil's Paralympic competitors maintain their fitness during the coronavirus pandemic, which has forced a near shut down of sport worldwide.

A dedicated Paralympic Training Centre in São Paulo has been closed since the middle of last month, while other facilities have also been shut as part of the country's efforts to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

The CPB said 80 athletes from swimming and athletics will be among the first beneficiaries of the project.

"The athletes were exposing themselves to the risk of looking for training places," said CPB President Mizael Conrado.

"With this programme, they can be more relaxed.

"The CPB will offer support at this difficult and very uncertain time that we have all been experiencing in the past few days.

"As soon as the pandemic is overcome, the facilities of our Paralympic CT and other sports equipment throughout the country will be available again."

CPB technical director Alberto Martins said the training programme would "ensure that athletes do not feel abandoned in this period".

"With that, we will prevent injuries and allow them to return, after the pandemic, with physical and mental conditions close to ideal," Martins added.

"Right now, weight gain is our biggest concern in relation to athletes."
