The International Esports Federation (IESF) and Asian Electronic Sports Federation (AESF) have reached an agreement on a "collaborative relationship to promote and advance esports globally as well as across the Asian continent."

The two organisations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to certify the partnership, doing so electronically in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

The MoU means the IESF now recognises and acknowledges the AESF as Asia's sole esports federation.

Likewise, the AESF now recognises and acknowledges the IESF as the only International Federation for esports.

"The MoU between the IESF and the AESF further reinforces IESF’s position as the only true international federation for esports," claimed IESF President Colin Webster, adding the agreement also "solidifies" the position of the AESF.

"Together, the two federations will ensure a greater degree of delivery and expertise, as well as ensuring the development and recognition of esports as a sport."

Formed in 2008, the IESF has in excess of 60 members, with Colombia, Kazakhstan, Turkey and Ukraine all joining this month.

Responding to the MoU, AESF President Kenneth Fok labelled today "an exciting day for us" and wished to thank everyone involved.

"I am sure that the partnership today is strong enough to unite the esports community, including publishers, organisations, and most importantly our esports players", Fok said.

The AESF recently announced that esports will be a medal event at the 2021 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, having previously been a demonstration event in 2017.

The AESF is recognised by the Olympic Council of Asia.

Sebastian Lau, the AESF director general, said the partnership with the IESF was "a key milestone" in his organisation's strategic plan.

"I truly believe that with the help from our partners at IESF who share the same vision, these goals are absolutely within our reach", Lau added.
