Austrian ski coach Walter Hubmann, who led Renate Götschl to her first International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine World Ski Championship title in 1997, has died at the age of 62.

Coaching the women's team until 2001, Hubmann was imperative to the success of Götschl who won the combined gold medal in Sestriere in Italy.

She also won world downhill gold in 1999 and the overall World Cup title in 2000.

Hubmann then switched to the men's team with success coming through Stephan Eberharter, who won giant slalom gold at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, as well as veterans Hermann Maier and Hans Knauß.

From 1996 to 1997 he was in charge of the Alpine European Cup as the FIS European Cup coordinator.

"FIS would like to express its sincerest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Walter Hubmann, as well as to the Austrian Ski Association," the FIS said.

After a long period with the Austrian Ski Association, Hubmann was the downhill coach for the Croatian Ski Federation, helping Ivica Kostelić to his overall World Cup win in 2011.

He also coached the national teams of Bulgaria, Great Britain, Switzerland, Hungary and Georgia.
